About Nathan's Quest

Clinton School District's Parents as Teachers Program has been hosting Nathan's Quest as part of their Month of the Child celebration since 2007. Nathan's Quest is a mother/son charity event in memory of Nathan Crabtree whose life ended too soon after a hard fought battle with childhood cancer. It is designed to honor the sacred bond between a parent and child while having fun and making a positive contribution to the community.

This year we have chosen Nathan's Quest as our kickoff event for Month of the Child and changed our event format. The Month of the Child theme has always been: The Power of One. This year's specific slogan is - We WILL Make a Difference.

April 2, 2011 a Mother/Son Expedition on the Katy Trail

Briley's Story

We were so excited when we found out we were expecting our second child ... Briley Margaret. I was not due until September. July brought bad news ... Briley was breech as wll as my blood pressure was running high. Within a few weeks, I had pre-ecampsia. By August 12, I was in the hospital with blood pressure so high they were fearful I was going to go into siezures. There was no choice, but to deliver Briley now. The doctor tried to turn her from the breech position but no luck ... C-Section required. She was born at 12:43 pm on August 13, 2005. By 2:00 pm the Children's Mercy ambulance was coming to get her. It was my worst nightmare! Her little lungs were not ready to do their job. I had to stay at my hometown hospital while she and her dad went to Chilren's Mercy NICU. I received pictures from him daily that were more than I could handle. I finally got to see her on Wednesday. I walked into the NICU and was quite overwhelmed. All of the tubes, wires and cords brought me to tears. There was my little girl on a ventilator. I was not even allowed to hold her. The wonderful nurses explained everything to me. As hard as it was to see her like that, I knew she was in good hands. The first time I got to hold her, our nurse even teared up with me. The nurses are real people with real feelings just like you and I. The nurses and doctors took time to conference with us each day as to her progress. They even called in the middle of the night to give us the great news when she was taken off of the ventilator. Although we got frustrated and longed to go home, we could not have been in a better place. Children's Mercy Hospital NICU doctors and nurses saved Briley's life. Each day I say a little paryer for the great people who work there as they gave us the opportunity to spend the rest of my life with our little miracle, Briley.

Briley's story is now the feature story and photo mosaic on the "Million Reasons Why" portion of the Children's Mercy web site. Htt://www.millionreasons.org/explore the mosaic.cfm. Briley has also been asked by Children's Mercy to be part of a new commercial they are developing. Children's Mercy Hospital has given Briley more than one "chance in a life time" moment and given her family a million reasons to be thankful.
